Main technical characteristics:
Iron Gates II Hydro-Power and Navigation System (SHEN Portile de Fier II) is the second land arrangement undertaken on Danube sector and located at km 853 and at about 65 km away and downstream of Drobeta Turnu Severin city.
The objective has an asymmetric configuration due to the fact that each branch of the Danube has a dam (the first one is located on the main branch of the Danube and the second is located on Gogosu branch), as follows:
– a main power plant with 16 Bulb type hydro power units (the Romanian side with 7 HU (2÷8) of 32.5 MW + HU 1 of 27.5 MW and the Serbian side with 8 HU of 27.5 MW – not yet refurbished);
– two additional power plants on the secondary branch of the Danube, with 4 hydro power units (the Romanian side with 2 HU of 27.5 MW and the Serbian side with 2 HU of 27.5 MW not yet refurbished);
– two locks (one for each side with the following dimensions: 310/34 m and an elevation difference of 12.5 m);
– two spillway dams (the Romanian spillway dam is on Gogosu branch and the Serbian spillway dam is on the main retention front).

The scope of the refurbishment works
The rehabilitation of hydro power units, auxiliary installations of the hydro-power unit block, auxiliary and electrical installations of the power plant, intake hydro-mechanical equipment, has the scope to efficiently use the Danube potential on this sector, by achieving the following goals:
– equipment readiness for a new operation cycle;
– significant increase of equipment reliability;
– reduction of maintenance and current repair stages;
– installed power increase , from 27.5 MW to 32.5 MW and thus, of energy production;
– improvement of safety standards.

The technological process related to hydro unit refurbishment works including the hydro unit, block and power station ancillary installations has the following phases:
– dismantling;
– repair of reused parts;
– corrosion-proof and condensate-proof protection;
– remounting equipment;
– tests and commissioning.
During this program it was intervened on the whole mechanical and electrical part of the unit and on the auxiliary installations.

Main technical characteristics:
Iron Gates I Hydro-Power and Navigation System (SHEN Portile de Fier I) is symmetrically located towards Danube axis and consists of :
– two hydro-power plants with a total power of 2328 MW and provided with high capacity Kaplan turbines (6 HU of 194 MW on the Romanian side and 6 HU of 194 MW on the Serbian side),
– three locks having the dimensions of 310 m x 34 m (two located on the Romanian side and one on the Serbian side) and
– a spillway dam with 14 spillways (7 spillways for each side).

In Romania, SHEN Portile de Fier I is located on Danube river, upstream of Drobeta Turnu Severin city, at km -952+959.
The Romanian lock is made for a maximum elevation difference of 34.4 m, having two stages whose axis are perpendicularly located on spillway dam axis, 310 m x 34 m chambers, 5.5 m sill depth and 10 m air volume.
The lock dimensions have been established under compliance to Danube Commission recommendations for the navigation in the Lower Danube sector, therefore, the lock was sized for the calculation convoy consisting of a tugboat and 9 barges having a capacity of 1500 tons or from 2 motorized ships having a capacity of 5000 tons.
The Romanian Lock rehabilitation works at SHEN Portile de Fier I is a project of national and regional importance due to the fact that the sluice-gate must provide a complete safety traffic on the Danube river. The equipment operation safety rising and the transit ships safety was achieved through sluice-gate refurbishment.

Three outage periods were required for the refurbishment of the Romanian lock, while the main works were grouped in three “Objectives” corresponding to the main location areas of the equipment within the sluice-gate, namely:
– Object 1 – Intermediate head: 04.06.2007 – 15.09.2008
– Object 2 – Upstream head: 01.05.2009 – 01.05.2010
– Object 3 – Downstream head: 01.04.2011 – 31.12.2011

The important works undertaken by ENERGOMONTAJ S.A. (hydro and electro-mechanical equipment) for this project are:
– replacement of flat gate – intermediate head, 34 m x 15.75 m
– replacement of service flat gate – upstream head, 34 m x 12.28 m
– replacement of safety flat gate – upstream head, 34 m x 12.42 m
– rehabilitation of repair miter type gate – downstream head, 34 m x 13.35 m
– rehabilitation of service miter type gate – downstream head, 34 m x 22.34 m
– replacement of flat valves – upstream and downstream head, 6 m x 6 m
– replacement of segment valves – intermediate head, 6 m x 6 m

Technical solutions for sizing, conception and selection of component sub-assemblies of flat gate – intermediate head:
– establishment of a gate construction solution consisting of two sections;
– sealed caisson removal from the lower section;
– driving motors coupling in the upper part of the lower section;
– replacement of the existing sliding supports with the latest generation supports made of elastomers ;
– modernization of rolling – guiding elements;
– complete replacement of hydraulic operation by the latest generation systems ;
– provision of modern, measuring and supervision sensor systems in order to ensure the gate timing;
– conception of a sealing system with highly reliable and resilient elements.

The total permanent weight of flat gate assembly: 832 781 kg

The above-mentioned technical solutions related to the steel construction and correlated to the solutions adopted to: the hydraulic operation installation; the operational parameters monitoring installation; and with the concept related to local & control tower control and sequential monitoring ensures a correct operation, thus increasing safety and operational life of the whole assembly consisting of the “flat gate” and the “hydraulic installations”.

The modernization and rehabilitation of the pumping station for pressure release and the underground duct network for water transport mainly consisted in the performance of the following works:
– dismantling of substation existing equipment (pumps, installations, motors, auxiliary installations, direction dampers);
– procurement and installation of technological pumping lines (a reservoir was made for 8 vertical intake pumps provided with electrical motors controlled by a completely automatic modern system with frequency converters);
The intake pumps reservoir is of caisson type (11 m x 7 m x 13 m) and gravitationally supplied through an inverted siphon uptake based on two DN1000 pipes, in parallel, where from the air must be fully extracted by the help of a vacuum pump, in view of a correct operation. The electric pumps are of centrifugal type with vertical shaft and 8 m intake columns; 6 units of 630 m/c pumping flow with 132 kW motors; 2 units of 200 mc/h with 55 kW motors.
– replacement of electrical and automation installations;
– execution of a modern, new antenna system made of PEHD, DN200 and DN250, SDR17 pipe joined by butt welding and PEHD hydrants with PE hydrant valves (L = 2200 ml).
– installation of 1250 kVA, 20/0.4 kV transformer unit in a PTAB enclosure where 8 pieces of DANFOSS frequency converters have been installed – with “cascade” type automatic control.
The outlets of the above 8 electric pumps have been connected to a collector that was supplying the actual irrigation network through a DN1000 flow meter.
– replacement of the compressed air installation;
– replacement of the existing draining installation;
– modernization of the duct valves;
– flowmeter installation at station exhaust;
– replacement of hydro-mechanical installations;
– replacement of the floater retaining installation on the pumping station intake.

Intervention works have been undertaken outside the station for the underground duct network, at the pits where the metallic components (covers, hand rails, access ladders, valves) were missing.

The gross surface afferent to Vâlcovia irrigation system is of 3596 ha and 110 sqm belong to SPP2 pumping station.

The waste generated on location (rubble, brick, plasters, metallic waste, excavated soil, concrete waste, household waste etc.) was selectively collected and recovered or removed in accordance to the waste type and to the valid environment regulations (Order M.M.D.D. no. 1798/2007) and Law no. 211/2011 provisions on the waste treatment.

The following works have been proposed to be undertaken under compliance to the project:
– extension of potable water exhaust duct, Bratocea street;
– replacement of potable water distribution networks for the streets: Petru Movila, Serii, Mihail Kogalniceanu, Crinului, Soarelui, Lunei, Plopilor, 23 August, Ciresi, 1 Iunie, 8 Martie;
– extension of distribution network for Cuza Voda street, Nicolae Iorga blvd.;
– extension of distribution network for Mihai Eminescu street for the water supply of Nicolae Balcescu;
– replacement and extension of connections on the designed networks;
– instalation of valve pits on the existing and the designed networks in order to optimize the water supply system operation.

The generated production waste was collected in adequate containers and removed when accumulated.
The pollutant emissions including the noise and other distress sources: the project provided works didn’t significantly affect the environment factors (air, soil, water, human settlements), subject to the compliance to the technical project, the proper handling and operation of the machinery and the application of all actions related to environment protection, including the strict limitation of the area afferent to the execution of the works.

Solutions adopted by ENERGOMONTAJ S.A., for the project undertaking:
– the water supply system operation was optimized;
– the potable water intake and distribution was provided under maximum sanitary security terms;
– modern materials(ducts) have been used for potable water distribution;
– the system leaks have been eliminated, thus achieving a compliant metering at the level of each consumer.

The upgrading and refurbishment works for the irrigation infrastructure of O.U.A.I. Interagro, no. 11, Giurgiu – Rasmiresti, Teleorman County consisted of the following execution stages:
– Modernization of SPP1 pumping station, electrical installations, hydro-mechanical equipment and construction works;
– Modernization of SPP18 pumping station, electrical installations, hydro-mechanical equipment and construction works;
– Replacement of irrigation networks, including SPP 1 hydrants;
– Replacement of SPP18 hydrants;

SPP1 pumping station covers a surface of 720 ha and has the following parameters:
– Total flow rate: 0.51 mc/s
– Pump height/load: 67 mca
– Installed power: 728 kW
– Power supply: 0.4 kV
The following equipment is provided for the station:
– 7 single stage, double flow, horizontal shaft (electric) pumps, 306 mc/h, H = 67 m, 75 kW ;
– 1 network refilling pump, 30 mc/h, H = 10 m, 5.5 kW ;
– 1 primer pump, 140 mc/h, 40 mbar, 11 kW ;
– 1 compressor 500 l/min, 10 bar, 4 kW ;
The main electric pumps are supplied from 5 power boards, 1 pump with frequency converter and 6 soft-starters, the role of the converter equipped pump is to adjust the network pressure. Pump suction is from the main channel on 4 pieces of DN 400 lines and the discharge is into a DN600 collector. A DN600 ultrasound flow meter was installed for water consumption metering and a 3.5 kW photovoltaic plant was installed to ensure the power supply during winter season.
About 6 km of PHD duct with diameters between 125 and 350; 300 m of PAFSIN DN 500 duct; 70 hydrants distributed on 5 antennas were replaced on field.

SPP18 pumping station covers a surface of 757 ha and has the following parameters:
– Total flow rate: 0.41 mc/s
– Pump height/load: 67 mca
– Installed power: 820 kW
– Power supply: 0.4 kV
The following equipment is provided for the station:
– 6 single stage, double flow, vertical shaft (electric) pumps, 370 mc/h, H = 67 m, 110 kW ;
– 1 network refilling pump, 30 mc/h, H = 10 m, 5.5 kW ;
– 1 compressor 500 l/min, 10 bar, 4 kW ;
The main electric pumps are supplied from 4 power boards; 1 pump with frequency converter and with 5 soft-starters; the role of the converter equipped pump is to adjust the network pressure. – 8 pieces of electrical pumps with horizontal shaft (6a + 2r) and double flow rotor type ETANORM 200 – 150 – 400 GG AA10GD5B;
– 8 pieces of electrical boards, Pn = 75 KW, with soft-starter, PCL automation and pressure transducer;
– 1 piece of electrical air compressor with piston, completely equipped with EPC 630-G type control set;
– 1 piece of FUS 060 ultrasonic flow meter with 2 sound tracks, retrofit mounted on the distributor- collector (exhaust) made of Dn = 800 mm steel pipe at a distance of about 8 m (10xDn800mm) away of the exhaust of the last pump;

OBJECT no. 2 – Rehabilitation of unit I irrigation network
– The agricultural land area proposed for rehabilitation was divided in 2 units:
– unit I: with an area S = 643.00 ha, irrigated by the duct CS 1 and A1÷A12 antennas;
– unit II: with an area S = 978.00 ha, irrigated by the duct CS 2 and related antennas.

– Replacement and installation of new, CS 1 secondary duct with a total length of 3791 m with PEID pipe, PE 80, DN 500 mm – 300 mm.
– Replacement and installation of new antennas made of PEID pipe, PE80, DN 160 mm PN 6 ( A1 – A 12 ) with a total length of about 10950 m, with 158 pieces of afferent hydrants.
– Reinstatement of 7 pieces of CV1 ÷ CV7 round valve recess made of concrete, Ø 3.00 m and h = 2 m.

OBJECT no. 3 – Rehabilitation of unit II irrigation network
– Replacement of 31 hydrants afferent to the antennas connected to CS2 secondary duct.
These are intermediary, above-ground hydrants, provided with protection, h = 1.25 m and DN = 100 mm.

Two pieces of frequency converters and two pieces of condenser batteries have been installed for the power factor balance and improvement and for a productive operation of the new irrigation equipment.

The main technical characteristics of the development:
The investment item “Rastolita Hydro-Power Developmentt” is included in the category of national interest works for the achievement, development and production of energy and is located in the North – West area of Mures county, thus providing a complex use of the river flows located in the right side of Mures river on Ilva-Rastolita-Bistra sector, within the administrative territory of Rastolita, Lunca Bradului and Vatava villages.

The main use of the development is for the following:
– ”Clean” energy production – approx. 117,500,000 KWh in Rastolita HPD with an installed power of 35.2 MW and a flow rate of 17.00 mc/s;
– Potable water supply – the development allows potable water supply system development downstream Rastolita, for the settlements located on Mures river basin and in the Transylvania Field peripheral area, within the administration of Mures, Bistrita-Nasaud and Cluj Counties.
– Rastolita downstream flows regularization – a flow rate of 6.6 mc/s shall be provided in Târgu-Mures area during the dry seasons.

The development layout consist of the following items:
– Rastolita Dam which is „rock fill with concrete mask” type having a designed height of 105 m, a dam crest length of 360 m and a base width of 350 m. The dam body is made of rock fill (V = 3,205,500 m3) and its sealing is of “mask” type with an area of approx. 84,000 m2 and a volume of 42,000 m3.
– The main headrace is though 8.52 km long underground gallery with an inner diameter of 3.5 m;
– The pressure node consists of a surge tower, butterfly valve house and penstock;
– Rastolita HPP is equipped with two Francis vertical hydro units of 35.2 MW ;

Power supply and connection to the system. The power supply is through a 110 KV line with a length of 8.9 km. A 20 kV overhead power line with a length of about 51 km exits the 110/20 KV transformer station to reach the social and technological organization locations.

The penstock is located between the valve house and ø2000/ 2 x ø1600 mm distributor from the station with a length of 685 m and an average diameter of 2.2 m.

The penstock is divided in 3 segments:
M1M2 segment located between Ml and M2 exits from the valve house with 21% slope angle. The segment inner diameter is of ø 2250 mm with a length of 184 m.
M2M3 segment located between M2 and M3, being the continuation of M1M2 segment and having 16% slope angle towards M1M2. The segment inner diameter is of ø 2150 mm with a length of 311 m.
M3M4 segment located between M3 and M4 being the continuation of M2M3 segment, ends at the station distributor and then starts with 27% slope angle towards M2M3. The segment inner diameter is of ø 2050 mm with a length of 188 m.

Expansion joints have been installed at certain distances on the segments in order to take over the expansions. The installation of a rail and a cart was required due to high slope in order to set the (6 m long) penstock segments. By the help of a 12 tf electric winch coupled with the cart, the segments have been launched downstream to the erection location where these have been set and welded on the supports.
After welding the segments, all welds have been visually examined and by ultrasounds. The segments have been corrosion proof protected both inside and outside, under “AMEROM” system with 2 1/2 sandblasting and three wet paint coats, each having a thickness of 175 µm. Three stages of pressure tests with pressure values of 8 – 30,4 daN/cm2 have been performed at the end of the erection works.
